Since conception, Hyfarm has worked hard at developing hybrid lines designed specifically for the hotter climates. However, superior hybrids always stem from superior purebreds and for Hyfarm the continual improvement of our purebred lines has the highest priority. All breeding values are based on Australian parameters that are regularly re-calculated.
The breeding programme incorporates four pure lines:
- Landrace/Dam
- Large White/Dam
- Large White/Sire
- Duroc Multi-purpose.
The breeding programme is carefully balanced to achieve yearly improvement over significant performance traits affecting productivity and carcass quality. The end result of a successful breeding programme is uniformity and the main key to uniformity is a purebred nucleus. Hyfarm is consequently operating with strictly purebred animals only with the entire population tested free from the Halothane Gene. All animals are tested under standard commercial conditions and a BLUP/PEST(PigEstimation) evaluation is run weekly to calculate an updated Net Economic Index (NEI-index). The NEI-index combined with a scrupulous visual examination is then our base for final selection.
